WCC Response to SEKI Cave Closures

In May, the WCC received a letter from Erik Meyer on the closure of SEKI caves. The WCC, along with a consortium of cavers in the community, are actively voicing concerns to the park.

We had previously communicated a closure of all trustee caves due to COVID-19 and indicated we would evaluate the feasibility of restarting the program when public tours began at Crystal Cave. After carefully considering several factors, which include significant staffing shortfalls and wildlife and human health concerns, we have decided to pause the program indefinitely. We hope to address the trustee program, along with broader cave resource issues, in a new Cave Management Plan. We hope this process will start in the next fiscal year (starts October 1, 2021) if funding and staffing permit. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.Erik Meyer, Ecologist, Physical Sciences Branch
